With the help of a generous donation from Hāna alum Gabe von Wellsheim, Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke presents I Kū Nā Loea, a financial assistance opportunity for graduating seniors of Hāna High School ready to take the next step in their academic, vocational, and/or professional journey.

$15,000 will be awarded to up to 3 winners in 2024.

Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke?

We are the Hāna Build building and construction program, Kahu ʻAi Pono culinary arts pathway, and on-campus gardens at Hāna School, the community garden of Mahele Farm, and the cultural preservation program Mālama Hāloa.

Our non-profit organization’s mission is built upon the core pillars of education, sustainability, community health and cultural fortitude, as it works to meet the real needs of our East Maui community.

  • Kumu Kukui (Cultural Activities Teacher)

    Kumu Kukui (Cultural Activities Teacher)

    Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke (MKHKI) is currently looking to hire a part-time Kumu Kukui (Cultural Activities Teacher). The position will be approximately 19 hours/week. The role of the Kumu Kukui serves as the Leader and Administrator of MKHKIʻs Cultural Activities, including Kuʻi Kalo, Makahiki, and Kuku Kapa.

    Cultural Activities: Kuʻi Kalo, Makahiki, Kuku Kapa

    • Develop the schedule and curriculum for the year (August-May) that incorporates these three activities (see recommended schedule on page 5).

    • Build relationships with teachers, school faculty, community partners, and Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke's dynamic programs and teams to successfully coordinate and lead all sessions, both during school and after-school.

    • Be in charge of all inventory of Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke (MKHKI) implements and supplies pertaining to these cultural activities, including organizing, maintaining, and reordering.

    • Establish and maintain key partnerships to assist in coordinating and participating in community cultural events, including but not limited to Pō Hawaiʻi during Aloha Week, Aha Makahiki (Makahiki Ceremony) in November, Kuʻi at the Capitol on Oʻahu or Molokaʻi Makahiki in January, and Taro Festival in April.

    • Execute all cultural activities while incorporating MKHKI's signature learning continuum by teaching and managing graduate and student apprentices to assist with all aspects of the cultural activities, providing opportunities for them to lead and grow as appropriate.

    • Share one's passion for Hawaiian culture, arts and crafts, history, and moʻolelo with various ages, especially as it pertains to kuʻi kalo, Makahiki, and kuku kapa.

    Administrative kuleana (tasks and responsibilities):

    • Communicate timely and positively via email, phone, and text on behalf of MKHKI.

    • Teach and manage graduate and student apprentices to prepare for and execute cultural activities for various audiences and educational and community purposes.

    • Capture photos of cultural activities for MKHKI grant reporting and storytelling.

    • Write anecdotes and/or quotes from participants for grant reporting and storytelling.

    • Collect and maintain accurate data on all deliverables associated with cultural activities, including but not limited to the number of sessions, implements, participants, and engagement hours.

    • Upload photos, anecdotes (story reports), and data logs to MKHKI's Dropbox in accordance with monthly and quarterly deadlines.

    • Assist the survey and grants team in distributing surveys to students at identified times throughout the year.

    • Other kuleana, as assigned or as they arise.

    Expectations—Applicants should:

    • Be a positive representative of this organization when communicating and working with community partners, ʻohana, teachers, students, and funders.

    • Have proven knowledge and skills in Hawaiian culture, arts and crafts, specifically in kuʻi ʻai and kuʻi kalo, mea pāʻani Makahiki (Makahiki games), and kuku kapa, and a desire to expand that knowledge.

    • Have proven writing, communication, and research skills in English and knowledge of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi enough to understand and communicate MKHKI's core purpose, perspective, and community and incorporate them into your work.

    • Be willing to learn more ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi through online or in-person classes provided.

    • Work well with a diverse team—administrative to programmatic—to contribute to and share MKHKI's unique stories and initiatives.

    • Possess wherewithal to work self-directed.

    • Be able to maintain documents (records), monitor and stay on track with set goals, and work independently without oversight.

    • Be able to create and maintain organizational systems, including but not limited to spreadsheets and PDFs.

    • Be able to engage with the local community—from keiki to kūpuna, kama’āina to malihini—in an authentic, compassionate manner.

    • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

    • Connect routinely with MKHKI teams and programs.

  • School Gardens Graduate Apprentice

    School Gardens Graduate Apprentice

    Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke (MKHKI) is currently looking to hire a full-time Graduate Apprentice to work with the School Gardens Team, part of our Kahu ʻAi Pono (Culinary Arts) Program, at Hāna School.

    General Upkeep:

    • Maintaining our work zones including weedeating, pruning, weeding, some mowing, and cutting back brush with a machete and chainsaw

    • Assistance in any new/future projects we are working on (food forest, lei orchard, citrus orchard, chicken coop)

    • Keeping our garden shed area tidy and all closets organized

    • Maintaining tools

    • Trash runs

    • Keeping a positive attitude and general willingness to work and see what needs to be done

    Mala/Orchard Maintenance:

    • Assistance in bed prepping, planting, weeding, harvesting, weighing, and washing

    • Building up composts to use in orchard and mala areas across campus

    • Knowledge of types of kalo and planting/processing methods is a plus

    • Availability for long weekends and breaks, and possible feeding of animals on weekends

    • Hydroponic/Aquaponic Systems:

    • Assist with feeding Aquaponic fish on the weekends

    • General help with getting the Aquaponic system completed

    • General willingness to learn alongside the team

    Education:

    • Interest in learning ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi alongside the team

    • Interest in working with and teaching kids in the mala, orchard, etc.

    Data Collection/Reporting:

    • Assist with capturing photos/videos of work being done, classes, etc.

    • Assist with collecting data such as produce poundage, planting/harvesting schedules, etc.

    Expectations—Applicants should:

    • Be a positive representative of this organization when communicating and working with community partners, ʻohana, teachers, students, and funders.

    • Have a desire to expand their knowledge of working in the mala, teaching, etc.

    • Have knowledge of Hawaiian culture and a desire to perpetuate the culture through your work, as well as continue learning alongside the team.

    • Work well with a diverse team—administrative to programmatic—to contribute to and share MKHKI's unique stories and initiatives.

    • Possess wherewithal to work self-directed.

    • Be willing to learn new skills to assist the team, such as creating spreadsheets and PDFs, maintaining documents, etc.

    • Have the ability to engage with the local community—from keiki to kūpuna, kamaʻāina to malihini—in an authentic, compassionate manner.

  • Culinary Arts Graduate Teacher

    Culinary Arts Graduate Teacher

    Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke (MKHKI) is currently looking to hire a part-time Graduate Teacher to work in our Kahu ʻAi Pono (Culinary Arts) Program at Hāna School.

    Culinary Arts Classes:

    • Assist the Kahu ʻAi Pono Program Lead and fellow team members in teaching culinary arts classes at Hāna School for middle and high school students

    • Assist in teaching, and sometimes lead, the monthly after school snack class for 4th-7th graders at Hāna School

    • Organize and prepare for classes (tidying up and cleaning the room, printing out materials, etc.)

    • Collaborate closely with the School Gardens Team to incorporate fresh produce grown on campus into the culinary arts classes

    • Brainstorm and contribute ideas for culinary arts curriculum and activities

    School-Wide Snack Initiative and Kūpuna Meal Distribution:

    • Assist the Kahu ʻAi Pono Program Lead and fellow team members in preparing and distributing fresh snacks to students Pre-K through high school

    • Assist the Kahu ʻAi Pono Program Lead and fellow team members in preparing fresh meals for the kūpuna food distribution initiative

    General Maintenance:

    • Keep the classroom organized and clean

    • Wash dishes, sanitize, mop, etc.

    Education:

    • Interest in learning ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi alongside the team

    • Interest in working with and teaching students in the culinary classroom and alongside the School Gardens Team

    • If not already attained, it will be a requirement to get a Food Safety Handler certificate

    Data Collection/Reporting:

    • Assist with capturing photos/videos of work being done, classes, etc.

    • Assist with collecting data such as number of class participants, etc.
